Chocolate Beef is composed of five Fine Arts students from University of the Philippines. It launched its self-titled album under Universal Records. The band’s first "professional" appearance was as front act for Parokya ni Edgar at Freedom Bar. Chito Miranda of the Parokya ni Edgar was the one who introduced the band to Universal Records.The origin of the band’s name, according to some band members, could be the English equivalent of "dinuguan" (a Filipino delicacy).
